The MOTUL Roof of Africa is officially upon us. The ‘Mother of Hard Enduro’ opened with an unusual scene today - instead of lining up in the blazing heat usually associated with Lesotho at this time of year, KTM riders team set off into snow.
Day one kicked off with ‘Around the Houses’, an event that saw riders blitz their through the tar roads of Maseru.
After three laps it was Brother Leader Tread KTM’s Travis Teasdale who motored his way across the finish line first, followed by his teammate Scott Bouverie and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Alfredo Gomez.
These results would determine the starting positions for the time trial that took place later that day which started at Bushman’s Pass.
The wet terrain and icy temperatures were predicted to suit some of the international riders in the event, but it was local riders who conquered the testing conditions instead. Teasdale was the third fastest KTM rider to finish.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Alfredo Gomez was set to take centre stage at this event, but unfortunately succumbed to a navigational error that resulted in a fifth spot for the day.
Competitive racing runs deep in the Lettenbichler genes. An elated Andreas Lettenbichler (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) just managed to beat his son, Manuel Lettenbichler (Brother Leader Tread KTM), who finished in a close seventh place behind him.
Brother Leader Tread KTM’s Bouverie ended the day in eighth and his teammate Dwayne Kleynhans rounded off the top ten.
Kirsten Landman faced unforeseen difficulties and after 2:24 hours ended off a tough time trial in the mountains.
