On the March 12, 2018 saw Savannah Woodward fly over international waters to Queretaro, Mexico where she was chosen by the race organizers to represent ITALIKA Racing to race as a representative of South Africa in the first ITALIKA Women’s World Cup.
The day after Woodward’s arrival, with little rest saw her travelling form Queretaro to Mexico City to participate in two days of intense technical training with the ITALIKA Racing School and Lorenzo Racing School at the Kartodromo Sierra Esmeralda circuit. Within these two days she learnt fundamental aspects about the bike she would be racing and soon learnt it was nothing like she had ever raced before. After a long days training on Thursday Woodward and her fellow competitors travelled back to Queretaro, where Testing and two days of racing would take place at the Ecocentro Circuit.
Friday saw Woodward and the rest of the ladies doing a shake down on the brand new ITALIKA Vort-X 650cc in the morning. This giving Woodward the opportunity to learn the track during the mornings shake down and testing.
Saturday saw Woodward partaking in official practice and had a pleasing qualifying which found her on the second row of the grid in 6th position for both of her races. Throughout the shake down and practice on Thursday and Friday Woodward remained in the top ten. At the end of the day Woodward went into her first race excited but focused. She got off to a great start and was up with the front runners for the first two laps until she mad a crucial mistake where she then finished the day off in 6th.
Sunday after knowing where Woodward had gone wrong she came back more determined for her second race. She got off to a good start but unfortunately got stuck behind a slower rider who rode very defensively and finally go past after four laps of trying. This ended Woodwards Second race off in 5th awarding her a 5th overall for the weekend. She has planned intensive training before her next race where she will proudly go abroad as a representative of South Africa in the second race of the ITALIKA Women’s World Cup.
Savannah Woodard- “I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this once in a lifetime opportunity. I cannot explain how much I appreciate all the effort put in by the series sponsors; ITALIKA Racing, Pirelli, Liqui Moly and Hawkers of giving me this opportunity to race in the first ITALIKA Women’s World Cup and proud to be endorsing the Casio brand. I have learnt so much over this past week, now that I am home I know what to work on and I will be more prepared and ready to fly the South African flag high for the next race at the end of May in Yucatan, Mexico.”
